Hi, I'm Thomas Grayston, creator of LetterLearn. I live in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia with my wife Kylie, and am currently a PhD student in the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Tasmania. I originally started making LetterLearn a couple of years ago when my younger brother, Rupert, was ready to start using a computer, but there wasn't any software forgiving enough for him to use. Rupert has Down's syndrome, and we had just purchased an IntelliKeys unit, since the standard keyboard keys were too small for him to aim at. I assisted Rupert in entering words into image searches on the Internet. He really enjoyed all the pictures of cats that came up once we successfully entered the word 'cat'! Unfortunately this took a lot of supervision, as I had to delete the extra letters that were invariably pressed between the correct ones. What he needed was a simple program that didn't mind if you made mistakes as long as you got all the letters there in the end. So I came up with LetterLearn, or something like it. I gradually added features, and after a number of requests from other parents who saw LetterLearn and wanted to use it with their child, I improved it to the point where it could be used by anyone. The end result is a great program that's easy to set up and customise, is forgiving to the child and rewards persistence over accuracy. LetterLearn helps kids identify and name letters and teaches them some basic keyboard skills at the same time. I hope LetterLearn will be useful to you too! -Thomas Now that you've read about me, why not give LetterLearn a try?Download a free trial now! |
